Child Trauma Specialists
We are an independent service specialising in therapeutic interventions and training. We predominantly work with children in adoptive placements, children in care and the adults caring for them.
We believe that every child is an individual and work collaboratively to tailor our interventions to the needs of each child.
Nurturing Families works in partnership with local authorities to provide therapeutic support post adoption.
We also work closely with parents, carers, school and the wider care team to ensure a holistic package of support.
Who Are Nurturing Families?
Steph and Ruth are both social workers qualified to masters level. They are HCPC registered and DBS checked. Between them they have over 22 years experience of working therapeutically with children and young people who have experienced abuse and neglect.
They are passionate about nurturing families - supporting the formation of strong, healthy family relationships. They do this by working therapeutically with children and young people to address their complex needs as a result of early trauma.
Steph and Ruth also provide consultation and training to support professionals working with children who have experienced developmental trauma.
Experienced Therapists
Both Ruth and Steph have undertaken extensive additional training in attachment; the impact of trauma on brain development; dissociation; emotional regulation and therapeutic parenting for adopted children.
They have been trained by Dan Hughes in his approach, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) to Level 2 and draw on this heavily in their work.
They are also influenced by approaches such as Developmental Attachment Therapy; Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR); Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); Family and systemic therapy in their work.
